Is your family interested in a 9-month nature-based preschool program for your child? Will your child be at least 3 ½ and fully potty-trained by the beginning of the school year?
If yes, then the Farm and Nature Preschool at Farrel-McWhirter Park may be the perfect fit for you!
The mission of The Farm and Nature Preschool is to provide a nature and play-based experiential learning environment to help foster a sustainable culture in our community. Located in the unique setting of a working farm and forested park, our preschool program supports the learning and development of our students mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially. Through time spent outdoors in nature as well as through free play and group time in our preschool cottage, we work to provide all children with the opportunity to learn about what interests them in ways that are effective and meaningful.
Our preschool’s curriculum is grounded in the philosophies of learning through play, emergent curriculum, and discovery. In addition to play-based, experiential learning, our curriculum includes science, math, language, visual arts, music, movement, and environmental education. These are coordinated into theme-based units which follow the natural cycles of change on our farm and in our forest, stream, and meadow. Through our program, children gain independence and self-esteem as they are encouraged by caring and experienced teachers to be active participants in their own learning.
2018-2019 Preschool Classes
Creative Play (Age: 3 ½ - 4 ½ years)
Let your child learn through their own imagination by wiggling like a worm, singing like a bird, playing hide and camouflage in the meadow, or cooking in the mud-kitchen in the garden. Through play and exploration your child will experience a nurturing and engaging environment that will lay the foundation for success. With an emphasis on small class size, this program is designed to be a perfect introduction to preschool, ensuring that each child feels part of our preschool family.
Location: Farrel-McWhirter Park
Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 4 - May 30, 9-11:30am

Preschool Adventures (Age: 3 ½ - 5years)
Play is a child’s work, and these preschoolers are working hard. Whether running like leaves in the breeze, examining woodpecker holes, spotting slugs on the trails, or discovering the animals that call the forest their home, students are making connections to nature and to each other. Teachers weave academic concepts throughout the daily activities, ensuring authentic learning. The wider age range of this class creates a rich environment full of opportunities for students to teach and learn from each other. At the end of this growth-filled year, older preschoolers will leave ready to take on Kindergarten, while younger students may move into Pre-K Discoveries with a matured sense of place in our preschool community.
Location: Farrel-McWhirter Park
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, September 5 - May 31, 9-11:30am
Max class size: 14 One spot available
Pre-K Discoveries (Age: 4-5 years)
Pre-K students are budding and blooming as scientists, artists, mathematicians, and story-tellers. Using magnifiers we will meet insects and worms up close, discover who lives in the forest and meadow, and learn how to be good stewards by recycling, reusing materials, and caring for plants and animals at the park. Teachers stretch existing skills and introduce new skills like letter names and sounds, counting numbers, and nourish inquisitiveness in preparation for your preschooler’s upcoming Kindergarten year. Big projects—like helping plant trees with forest restoration crews—offer chances to apply skills and broaden students’ sense of community and stewardship. As teachers gradually and gently encourage children to take bigger steps towards self-reliance and building their own curiosity, each child can develop their potential and thrive as part of our preschool community.
